Preface

Sanhang poetry, as the name implies, is a form of Chinese micro-poetry consisting of three lines. Therefore, it is also known as three-line poetry. Typically, around thirty characters in length, with no requirements for character counting per line or rhyme, sanhang poems adhere to inherent, poetic, and unique structure. It exerts all its efforts to fully present, explore, and deepen the themes of the subject. The value of sanhang poems lies in provoking implied meaning, in presenting the grand through the small, in revealing the vast world through tiny grains of sand. Sanhang poems embrace a wide range of linguistic tools such as metaphor, synesthesia, symbolism, etc. to enrich their expression. This versatility has contributed to its robust expressive power, which can be used to convey ideas, create mood, build momentum, set the ambience, and so on so forth. This is why the creation of sanhang poems has remained enduringly popular, not only in China but also overseas. In order to showcase the creative breadth of sanhang poetry among overseas Chinese poets, we have compiled this anthology.

Titled "Ten Sanhang Poets of Overseas Chinese," this anthology features the works of ten poets among overseas Chinese who are passionate about, frequent in, and proficient at the creation of the sanhang art. The works selected here, in terms of their materials, draw widely from various aspects of life, including snippets of daily life, scenes from nature, and even the characteristics of planets in the universe. From a textual perspective, they each have their preferences, some favoring simplicity and precision, some liking seasoned fluency, while others prefer beauty and rhythm. In terms of imagery, they all emphasize novelty, vividness, and profound meaning, displaying abundant imagination, tension, and infectious power. Regarding themes, they all delve deeply, each with its own unique focus, shaping ideas, creating imagery, setting moods, and evoking atmospheres, showing rich and profound thoughts and emotions.

In conclusion, these works are almost universally exquisite in diction, full of literary charms, and soul-stirring. Almost every piece is a classic, widely appreciated, and dearly loved. They are truly worth taking time to read and savor. Here, we sincerely recommend them to you.

However, we acknowledge that limitations in time and resources may have resulted in omissions, and we extend our sincere apologies to any poets whose work may have been overlooked.
